[...] As I prepare for my expedition into family life, one of the things I have been doing is scouring the web for examples of familes who have managed to maintain an adventurous lifestyle with their children. One of the first family adventures I came across is the tale of Ben and Kami Crawford, who backpacked the 93 mile Wonderland Trail with their 4 children ages 2,4,6 and 8. It took them 12 days to hike the trail, which loops around the base of Mt. Ranier, during which time they gained and lost around 20,000 feet in elevation. There are a few hairy moments; morale flagged during the constant rain mid-trip, a few dicey suspension bridge crossings had me squirming a little, and I can’t help but think about what I would do differently in terms of preparedness for extreme conditions. But overall, they had a great trip and I find it heartening to see an example that negates all the comments I’ve been getting about how we’ll never be able to leave the house again after we have kids. You can watch all 9 narrated slideshows of their trip here.
Scott,
So cool. Thanks for the comment and link. It's always awesome seeing other people's accounts of the same adventure. Everyone has a different take. I still haven't made the video of this last summer and since we're expecting number 5 in a month I better get on that. Anyways, now you have my blog info so you'll have to let me know when you guys drag your kids out on the trail! =)

Crawfords,
We met on the Wonderland on your final day as you were hiking out to Paradise. I snapped a photo to show my wife that having kids doesn't mean going slower in life. I ended up posting that photo on my blog to inspire others as well. Imagine my surprise when I got a responce recently that directed me to your youtube videos. It didn't take me long to google and find your blog as well. I wanted to thank you again for the inspiration, and send you a link to your photo. Keep up the adventures.

I would highly recommend going to Mt Angel Abbey (just outside of Portland), you can take a tour and if you need a little meditation time they have a place to stay, with out any outside distractions. This is where monks live and carry on their spiritual lives, they also have certain items they make by hand and sell, very iteresting and worth the time to see.

I found this wonderful collection of videos on Offbeat Mamma... Beautiful and inspiring. (I watched the whole hour!!) Your children are so blessed to have such great parents. It may of been 2 weeks of grumbles and irritations, triumphs and celebrations... but you made a lifetime of memories and smiles. As a couple of folks trying to make some kids I hope we can do the same... thanks for warming my heart today.

Rhonda, Glad you made it safe. Thanks for the tips.

Elizabeth, We had pretty standard gear but were very glad that we packed rain gear. Memory, our youngest, was carried for most of the way but probably walked around 15 miles or so.

Kami and I have been discussing whether or not to attempt it again this summer or wait a year.
